Liam's new iPod and Specktone iPod stereo. At three weeks, I think he might already be the most spoiled kid in America.
But, it actually does make sense. Not having music in Liam's room isn't an option-- he must be indoctrinated into the land of good music early on, so as not to be led astray by the Wiggles of the world. Plus, I don't buy many CDs anymore, and when I do I put them directly onto the iPod. So, when I buy music for Liam, I don't want a stack of CDs taking up what little space we have in his room, and I want playing downloaded music to be quick and easy. (We can always start a mutual vinyl collection later to appreciate album art). See? It's really not excessive....
Among some other kid-friendly tunes (Sufjan, The Weepies), I'm currently loading his iPod with the album below, which we received as a gift at one of his showers and I highly recommend:
And I solemnly swear the iPod of my son will never contain:

That's awesome. I gotta hear a couple Radiohead songs.
Good for you. I don't think you can ever start a child too early on quality music. Though, I wonder about your selection of Radiohead. A little British, don't you think?
Your choices could be a little more American. You want Liam to be a true patriot, right?
You want him growing up asking for flapjacks and Big Macs, not bangers and mash.
I have to agree with Colin on this one. Instead of pushing Eurotrash tendencies and anti-American propaganda on him at such a young age you may want to consider some good ol' ass kickin Americana Nashville country. I'm thinking Toby Keith but it could be Travis Tritt.
I guess you're right. I can't believe I even contemplated such anti-American choices. Randy Travis, here I come.
Good on ya, Joel.
They Might Be Giants has a few good children's albums. We bought "NO!" for Zoƫ when she was about two months old, and she still listens to it just about every night at bedtime. Four years later, I've got a kid whose favorite song is Sufjan's Chicago.
I think that the Innocence Mission released an album of lullabies recently. It's on my "to-get" list on eMusic, but I haven't bothered yet.
Now it's super temting to buy you guys some Barney. If Liam had the same Grandma that my kids have you wouldn't be able to keep your promise!!! (but you don't have to play it. hint hint.)
I agree with Rae about "NO!" That album rocks. Not exactly a lullaby album though. For pleasant and not cheesy lullabies, try Jane Siberry's "Hush". It has such a great vibe for sleepy babies and also includes the theologically incorrect song "Jacob's Ladder". (But it's still a pretty song.)
Also, don't forget Willie Nelson's "Rainbow Connection" album. However, it has a couple questionable phrases on it for children that don't let things slip by. But, that's Willie! What can we expect?
First, congrats on the whole "dad" thing. That's awesome. :-)
Second, and this may offend Colin and his uber-patriotic tendencies, don't be afraid to throw in some international music. I may be biased, but hey, a little early exposure to foreign languages never hurt anyone.. ;-)
Glad I found your blog. :-)
